Guest Column: Make mental health treatment available to children

Pointing out that there is a projected rise in child poverty over the next five years, it says "It is a real concern that cuts to support for low income families have the potential to entrench the impact of poverty on the mental health and well-being of children across the United Kingdom". "When you hear about budget cuts for mental health, do not be alarmed, it will not affect the seven counties we serve".

"For the 10,000 mothers that will not fit Maternal Mental Health criteria this year to receive funded holistic treatment for perinatal depression, and the 7,500 mothers that will experience a significant delay in diagnosis this year - this would be a welcome Mother's Day present that they desperately need". These were just some of the findings in a federally funded study conducted by Michigan State University that looked at mental-health literacy around four major issues: anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse and prescription drug abuse. Stigma about anxiety remains strong, with 63 percent of the respondents having some level of stigma toward anxiety and 73 percent of them reporting that this stigma exists in their communities.

We must remove the stigma of seeking help, which starts with ourselves. At its core, telling someone to they should try not being depressed is as effective as telling them not to have the flu and that is something more people are beginning to understand. Evidence has shown that untreated mental illness can impact our physical health and increase morbidity and mortality of many chronic conditions such as heart disease. This type of perspective on mental health is poisonous and dated. We need to recognise the positive strategies that work for us and put them into practice when things feel hard.

Encourage an environment where mental health is spoken about openly. Are you thinking about reaching out for professional help? If you avoid situations or scenarios that make you anxious, you won't ever overcome them.

'We absolutely do need days, weeks, months dedicated to making people more aware of mental illness - yes, even more aware than we collectively are right now.

New research by the Mental Health Foundation has found that the UK's "mental health is deteriorating".
