Local Red Cross officer heads to Houston as rains hit Texas

Here in Southeast Missouri- The Red Cross is working to help Hurricane Harvey victims by deploying not only volunteers- but supplies too

The American Red Cross is looking to deploy 4,000 disaster relief volunteers to Texas over the next several weeks. They are seeking assistance to help with pets in the form of cash donations, fostering, supplies, and volunteers.

"When families across Texas need shelter, disaster relief and comfort, Red Cross volunteers are there to help them", said Amy Grace, Executive Director of the American Red Cross serving the Heart of Texas.

Red Cross volunteers in South Dakota are stepping in to help. "Red Cross, it's in your blood, that's why you go to all these remote places, so you can just help other people", said Shauna Ringel, Red Cross volunteer. Some shelters are seriously understaffed: There are six people in Corpus Christi in a shelter with 900 hurricane victims, Blake said, because convoys were unable to get there during the storm.

"These are really awesome people", Concannon said.

As Hurricane Harvey brings massive floods and destructive winds to Texas, victims are in need of relief and aid.

The local blood center placed Hurricane Harvey on the splash page of its website prior to it making landfall, and is still seeking donations to help those affected by the storm.

"They want to get us down there early because there's not much time between now and when it really gets ugly, ' a Red Cross volunteer, said".

Red Cross official Charles Blake briefs a group of volunteers at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The National Weather Service projected rainfall from the storm could reach 50 inches in some areas, and in tweets called the storm and the scope of its damage "unprecedented", "life-threatening" and "beyond anything experienced".

Trailers full of shelter supplies including cots and blankets enough to support more than 20,000 people are in Texas. A $10 donation can be made by texting "REDCROSS' to 90999".

In addition, the Red Cross has prepositioned blood products in Houston ahead of the storm to help ensure adequate blood supply is maintained over the weekend. In addition, the Microsoft Philanthropies Twitter account also stepped in, pinning a tweet about how you can support those in the path of Hurricane Harvey by donating to the American Red Cross.
