The collapse of the Bhendi Bazar building marks the first major building collapse since the torrential rains the city faced on Tuesday. The building is in a congested lane, but the police have cordoned the area around it.

The building caved in like a pack of cards around 0830 hrs with a loud thud - after that smoke and dust billowed out of the debris. Khabale-Patil said rescue operations would go on into the evening.

"There was an explosion-like shattering sound". We have seen people leave houses and not get their redeveloped houses. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is at the spot as are 10 fire engines. "We have all the papers and information with us regarding it", MHADA chief public relations officer Vaishali Wagh told local news channels. Rescue workers in hard hats clambered up the mound and hammered at concrete slabs with hammers to reach underneath.

Several of the relatives of people continue to camp at the Bhendi Bazaar locality keeping their fingers crossed. He added, "People fear that they will not come back to their original homes once they leave and go to transit camps in the suburbs". The death toll is expected to rise. People had however refused to move and one family had even obtained an HC stay in the matter. A Shiv Sena leader had come under the scanner as extensive renovations on the ground floor were found to be the reason behind the collapse.

Distraught residents said they rushed to the scene of the collapsed structure after hearing a loud crash.

The buildings surrounding the collapsed one have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Authorities are scrambling to rescue survivors after a six-storey building collapsed in a working-class neighborhood of Mumbai Thursday morning.
