Redskins vs. Rams Monday morning game notes

- The Washington Redskins ran and ran and ran some more. Thomas has never missed a snap in his decade-long career, which is truly remarkable given just how many injuries happen each and every week in the NFL.

Despite these injuries the Redskins displayed the "next man up" mentality and it paid off. Players after the game were crediting the guys that ended up stepping in making sure there was no drop off. Is that offensive line going to hold up all season?

But even with the new additions and veteran departures, Washington's performance felt familiar.

Hekker did something else with his arm, in the fourth quarter, when he faked a punt and completed a 28-yard pass to Josh Reynolds. This week, the Redskins turned over a new leaf. First down, let's commit to run the football throughout the game.

The Redskins have a decent committee at the running back position. Regardless, if those two scenarios remain in play, the Redskins have a good chance for success Sunday night in Week 3 against a Raiders defense allowing 4.8 yards per carry thru two games. He was replaced by rookie Samaje Perine. The two-headed duo of Rob Kelley and Chris Thompson killed the Rams. He got four targets, catching three of them for 48 yards and a touchdown. Kirk Cousins bounced back from his very bad game a week ago to have a mediocre one this week.

After the Cousins to Grant touchdown connection, Mason Foster intercepted Jared Goff's pass on the first play from scrimmage following the touchdown.

"That's kind of par for the course with my story on the football field, going back to high school and college", Cousins said Monday. Brown has been inactive for the Redskins first two contests, but he has potential and looked good in the preseason.

Switching to the offense, there were two key takeaways from the game yesterday.

And it's because of that frustration that we find ourselves handing out mostly average to below average marks for the Rams following a performance that wasn't awful, but could've been a whole lot better. The running game was sublime. With him being listed day-t-day we likely won't know his game-time status until Friday or later.

A narrow loss after a blowout win didn't drain the Rams of their confidence.

Chris Thompson starred on offense with a pair of long touchdowns and almost a third if not for a drop, and Samaje Perine fought hard on his rushes and, most importantly, protected the football after taking over the early-down role in Kelley's absence. The fact that the Rams rallied and almost took the lead in the fourth quarter is a testament to the immediate improvement under McVay.

The Rams will reveal more in the coming days.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book, the Rams are 2.5-point home favorites versus the Redskins, who opened as a 1.5-point favorite before the line jumped the fence.
