Your Favorite Tom Petty Songs

Local musician remembers rocker Tom Petty

Tom Petty who died Monday at 66 was considered the quintessential American rock star whose seemingly bottomless bag of tunes felt as though he'd written them to soundtrack the specifics of your life

Growing up together in Gainesville and seeing one of my students blossom as an incredibly gifted musician and songwriter has been one of my most fulfilling experiences in this life.

Not many people know about this Tom Petty song, but anyone who's experimented with drugs will appreciate and relate to it. That set on September 22 was a flawless collection of hits from one of the great writers of rock, backed by a band with a near-telepathic relationship to its singer.

Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but the singer was also a successful solo artist who left his mark on a generation.

"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty".

For those precious couple of hours with my daughter that Saturday night in late July, everything was more than all right - as it's often been throughout my life when a Tom Petty song was playing. Even though, in his 40-year-long career Petty never became the most iconic or the most acclaimed rock star in the industry, he has had the most rock-solid career in music that there could be.

"We came here first in 1977, and fell in love with your town", he said, according to an Illinois Entertainer account.

This 1985 hit - widely known for its creative music video - reached No. 2 on the Billboard Rock Tracks list. "I love his class, honesty and how unusual and amusing he is".

Tweeted the E Street Band's Steven Van Zandt: "Man this can not be happening".

In 1996, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released a soundtrack to the romantic-comedy film "She's the One". Our deepest love and condolences to his family and band. I had sort of moved away from mainstream rock "n" roll in my musical taste at that point much more into Talking Heads and Elvis Costello and the Ramones and stuff the radio didn't play. "A brother and true believer". Paul McCartney wrote on Twitter, "Sending love to Tom Petty and his family at this hard time". "We share this news with regret, but Tom's doctor has advised Tom to take additional days off before performing". "Vegas and now a great music hero has passed".

"There were times when we definitely were not getting along, when we fought like f***ing Apaches, you know".

"We're told after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support", TMZ reported at 3:30 pm ET on Monday. And on the joyous songs, the ballads, the odes to eternal devotion, you could practically drown in them.
